Dimensions

Definition

Every tracking tool, be it Google Analytics, etracker or Piwik Pro always show at least one dimension in their report displays. Thus, a report always consists of at least one dimension and also at least one metric.

Dimensions are attributes of the displayed metrics (values) and are usually always in the first column within the tracking tools.

Interpretation

In web analytics, you need dimensions to be able to analyse how often an attribute was called up or clicked on. Examples of dimensions and suitable attributes are:

  • Page – How often the page was called up in a fixed time interval.
  • Country – In which country do the users visit my website?
  • Product – Which products do my users buy and how high is my turnover?
  • Entry page – On which page do my users start their session?
